Michael Row That Boat Ashore - Theme and Variations

Michael started with my husband Emlyn and me playing around - the way we often do. Emlyn's a bluesman, and an improviser and this is what we came up with. We put Michael in the natural minor. I love this key for folk songs because chord seven becomes this exquisite major chord a tone under chord one, and the movement between the two feels so natural and charismatic to me. We created a refrain to feature these two chords and bring something new to the song. And you'll hear Emlyn's exciting rhythmic momentum.
